Hailed by Rolling Stone and The Gaurdian as an “instant classic,” it’s not enough to describe this group as another indie/folk band. Robin Pecknold, leader of the quintet, prefers “baroque pop, music from fantasy movies, Motown, block harmonies…not much of a rock band.” Who are we to argue?
The 11 tracks are covered with influences of Neil Young, the Beach Boys, and even the late 60’s Love, as well as harmonies unmatched since Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Still, Fleet Foxes achieve something rare here—taking us back into the melodic roots long before our time while walking us into uncharted territory that only the mysterious, Pacific Northwest seems to provide.
Begin with downloading “White Winter Hymnal” and, if you live in the UK and are personal friends with a ticket broker, see them live this fall.
